Olympics

Over the next two weeks we will be spending a lot of time learning all about the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympic Games. We have studied the ancient Greek games compared to the current games, the Olympic Rings and the Olympic Torch. We still have so much to learn about including the medals, motto and what it takes to be a good sportsman and demonstrate sportsmanship.

We have found out so many facts about the Olympic Games such as:
  • The Olympic Games are held every 4 years.
  • The Winter Games are held 2 years after the Summer Games.
  • There are 5 Olympic rings which stand for 5 continents of the world - Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa and the Americas.
  • The colours of the rings were decided on because they were the colours in all the flags of the world.
  • The rings stand for unity.
  • The Olympic Torch is lit by the suns rays in Olympia, Greece, at the Temple of Hera.
  • It is carried around Greece and then to the country hosting the games.
  • Athletes from all over the world carry the Olympic Flame around until the opening ceremony.
